The Village of Los Lunas has been working for the past several years to preserve the historic Gallegos/Archuleta House on the old Country Inn property, and convert it into a Route 66 Museum and Visitors Center to highlight the pre-1937 Route 66 that traveled through Los Lunas. Between December 2018 and November 2020, the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning worked with Village staff and community members on site planning, historic rehab, and architectural design plans, as a part of a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Grant.
Now that the grant activities have been completed, the Village has begun the next phase of the project - rehabilitating the historic house to get it ready for its development as a museum. The house has experienced some typical wear and tear for a one hundred year old structure, and the Village will be working with a historic preservation consultant to make repairs that respect the historic construction methods while also helping to prevent any further damage. This will include removing vegetation around the foundation, and stabilizing floor joists in the rooms.
